What’s Involved in a Metabolic Test?

A metabolic test is a medical procedure that measures how efficiently your body processes and uses energy. It typically involves two key components:

  1. Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR):
This measures how much oxygen your body consumes while at rest, providing an understanding of how many calories you burn when not actively exercising.

  2. VO₂ Max Test:
This measures how much oxygen your body uses during physical activity (like running on a treadmill), which helps gauge your fitness levels and cardiovascular efficiency.

Both tests monitor your oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production, giving health professionals insights into your energy expenditure and metabolism.

These tests help evaluate the effectiveness of your current fitness and nutrition plans, enabling you to make data-driven adjustments for better results.

What to Expect During Your Metabolic Test

The Metabolic Test (Resting Metabolic Rate)

Before the Test:

  • Fast for 5 hours: Only water is allowed; no food or other drinks.

  • Rest as much as possible: Avoid strenuous activity prior to the test.

Preparation:

  • Inform us if you have asthma or COPD, as it may affect results.

  • Wear a heart rate monitor provided by the clinic.

During the Test:

  • Sit on a bench in a relaxed position.

  • A mask will be placed over your nose and mouth to measure your breath.

  • Breathe normally for 10 minutes.

What We Measure:

  • Oxygen intake and carbon dioxide exhalation.

  • Breathing rate, which helps determine your metabolic rate.

The VO₂ Max Test (Fitness Test)

Before the Test:

  • You can eat a light snack, but avoid caffeine, as it can increase your heart rate.

  • Wear comfortable workout clothing (running or cycling gear is recommended).

Preparation:

  • Wear a heart rate monitor (provided by us!).

  • A mask will be placed over your nose and mouth to measure oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange.

During the Test:

  • Choose your preferred equipment: Wattbike or treadmill.

  • Start with a 3-minute warm-up at an easy pace.

  • Perform an 8–12-minute fitness test, with intensity increasing until you reach fatigue.

  • After reaching fatigue, take 2 minutes of recovery while remaining stationary with the mask still on.

What We Measure:

  • Oxygen consumption and heart rate to determine your fitness level.

  • The test is tailored to your fitness ability, ensuring accurate and personalised results.
